The Times Square sailor is of Portuguese origin George Mendonsa, the sailor photographed on the famous photo kissing a woman in Times Square during the celebrations of the end of the Second World War, is dead. He was 95 years old. George Mendonsa was born February 19, 1923 in Newport, Arsenio and Maria Mendonsa, immigrants from Portugal. His father was a fisherman, and George left high school to start his trade before joining the navy in 1942.
