About Santiago

The apostle Santiago made his way to this part of the Iberian Peninsula proclaiming the words of Jesus, whose supposed tomb is in the cathedral behind the high altar.
The pilgrimage dates from the Middle Ages beginning in the ninth century.
The Camino has become a first-rate spiritual and cultural itinerary and is traveled by tens or hundreds of thousands of people each year. It was declared First European Cultural Itinerary in 1987 and a World Heritage Site.

​Many pilgrims repeat the experience through different routes.
